2008 French Open: Semi-Final Results - Women's Draw
The scene is set for a memorable finale at the 2008 French Open after Dinara Safina and Ana Ivanovic booked their places for Saturday’s final at Roland Garros.
On Thursday Ana Ivanovic advanced to her second consecutive French Open final by defeating compatriot Jelena Jankovic in a tough 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 match. Despite becoming the first player at the 2008 French Open to win a set against Ivanovic, Jankovic had no answer to her opponent’s game in the third set, losing four games in a row to concede the match.
Ivanovic’s victory not only set up her best opportunity to date to claim a grand slam title, but also propelled her to the number one spot in the WTA rankings, ending Maria Sharapova’s short reign at the top of women’s tennis.
Meanwhile, Dinara Safina reached her first grand slam final courtesy of a comprehensive 6-3, 6-3 victory over Svetlana Kuznetsova. The fact that Kuznetsova was clearly struggling with her game meant that a third consecutive comeback was not required of Safina.
"Pretty horrible," Kuznetsova said, summing up her nerve wracked performance in the 2008 French Open semifinal. "I felt like I could not give her fight because I was fighting first against myself."
