2008 French Open: Day 10 Results - Men's Draw
Un-seeded Gael Monfils gave French Open fans something to celebrate yesterday, upsetting 5th seed David Ferrer to earn a semi-final berth at the 2008 French Open.
Monfils put in an imperious performance in his quarterfinal, dropping only one set as he beat Ferrer 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Monfils’ triumph makes him the lowest seeded player to reach the French Open semi-finals since 1999, and had the French crowds on their feet as he walked off the court.
Monfils’ opponent in the semi-finals, Roger Federer, had little trouble booking his spot in the semi-finals as he overcame a wobbly start before brushing aside Chilean challenger Fernando Gonzalez 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4. The Chilean had no answer to Federer’s guile, and smashed his racquet in frustration towards the end of the 3rd set.
The other 2008 French Open semi-final will pit Rafael Nadal against Novak Djokovic. The penultimate stage of the 2008 French Open should provide two epic matches, with 3 of the ATP top 4 progressing to this stage, and Gael Monfils likely to make Federer fight all the way in his 16th consecutive grand slam semi-final.
