Murray survives injury afflicted match

Andy Murray has progressed to the second round of the Dubai Championship after an odd game against Sergiy Stakhovsky that saw both players struggle with ankle injuries.

It was Murray who eventually prevailed, playing through his injury until Stakhovsky felt unable to continue, limped to the net and called it day at 30 love in the final game of the match.

The final score read 6-7 (3/7), 6-3, 5-3, retired in Murray's favour. Murray was bemused in victory, telling reporters: “If he can't continue, he can't continue."

The two players are destined to meet again in less than a fortnight, when Britain will take on Ukraine in the first round of the 2009 Davis Cup.

The match marks the second occasion in less than a month that Murray has won a match where both players were suffering from leg injuries.

Murray will take on either Rainer Schuettler or Arnaud Clement in the second round of the Dubai Tennis Championship.
