Andrew Murray - French Open Men's Tennis Players
Britain's pride
and joy, Andrew Murray, has been
hard at work improving his fitness levels for the 2008 season, but the young
Scot, who has oodles of talent, has started the year with some very mediocre
results.
Murray has shown that he has the talent and the skill to beat some of the very best in men's tennis but he seems to have a problem with his consistency and for someone who has been on the circuit since 2005 he has very little to show for his efforts.
Over the couple of years that he has been on the centre stage of international tennis he has surprised his many detractors by claiming the scalps of current world number one Roger Federer, former world number ones Lleyton Hewitt and Andy Roddick, former Britain number one and Davis Cup teammate Tim Henman, Germany's Tommy Haas and the man who stretched Roger Federer to five sets at the 2008 Australian Open, Janko Tipsarevic.
Murray is constantly plagued by injury, which does not help his cause and in 2007 alone he had to withdraw from two of the four annual grand slams - the French Open and Wimbledon. Ironically the stumbling Scot has made it into the top ten of the ATP rankings, but not through big event results. His ranking has slipped dramatically in recent times and he is currently ranked 22nd (7 April 2008).
The 20-year old has never progressed further than the fourth round in a grand slam, and he is yet to claim his maiden ATP Masters Series victory, yet the young man is constantly punted as an up and coming star. Granted, he has shown moments of brilliance, but he somehow has to harness his talent and play more consistent and credible tennis if he is ever going to make it back to the top of the ATP rankings.
The hordes of expectant fans will be hoping that Murray will pull off an emphatic win at the 2008 French Open - he has indicated that he has a preference for playing on clay - but he will have to be more than masterful to down the brilliance of Rafael Nadal or douse the flame of Serb, Novak Djokovic, to claim his first grand slam win.
Murray has only met Nadal twice and he has succumbed to the world number two on both occasions. He did, however, push Nadal to five sets at the 2007 Australian Open in one of his better performances. His record against Novak Djokovic is not much better - they have met head-to-head on three occasions and the Serb has triumphed each time.
