Svetlana Kuznetsova Profile

Svetlana Kuznetsova

Svetlana Kuznetsova emerged as the flag-bearer for Russian women’s tennis after winning the French Open in 2009. Kuznetsova added the French Open to the US Open title she had claimed in 2004, confirming her status as one of the most determined and versatile players on the WTA Tour.

Svetlana Kuznetsova Bio

Svetlana Kuznetsova was born in St. Petersburg, Russia on the 27th of June 1985. Kuznetsova’s father was a cycling coach, who mentored her mother and brother through a succession of impressive achievements on the international stage. However, the young Kuznetsova had no interest in cycling, choosing to play tennis instead.

Kuznetsova was not an exceptional talent during her childhood, and despite attending a tennis academy in Barcelona was not regarded as champion material. Despite this assessment of Kuznetsova’s abilities, her father encouraged her to continue playing tennis, and by the age of seventeen Kuznetsova had claimed her first WTA title.

Svetlana Kuznetsova Playing Style

Svetlana Kuznetsova is a versatile player capable of beating the best in the game on all surfaces. The Russian is one of the most physical players on the WTA Tour and possesses one of the hardest forehand shots in the women’s game.

Along with her strength, Kuznetsova is blessed with excellent mobility and is one of a handful of players capable of sliding on all surfaces. Her agility, combined with an excellent serve-and-volley game makes her an effective opponent on clay courts.

Svetlana Kuznetsova Achievements

Svetlana Kuznetsova French Open Form

Svetlana Kuznetsova has struggled to produce results in the 2011 tennis season - with her best result a place in the final of the Dubai Tennis Championships. The Russian last won a tournament in August 2010, and may be struggling with the inconsistent form and focus that has bedeviled her throughout her career. While her form this year does nothing to suggest she can successful defend her title, Kuznetsova could still make an impression on an open draw.
