Jelena Jankovic - French Open Women's Tennis Players

Although Jelena Jankovic is yet to win a grand slam singles title she has had a taste of the top spot, having reached the number one on the WTA rankings in August 2008, but it was really for the shortest of time before countryman, and one of her biggest rivals, Ana Ivanovic wrestled it away from her!

The Consummate Professional

Jankovic is one of those truly devoted professionals and possibly plays more competitive matches than any one else on the circuit - in 2007 for instance she became the first player since the great Chris Evert in 1974 to win 50 matches in the first part of the season!

One of her greatest attributes is her awesome stamina and fitness levels and she has shown she has great touch on virtually all court surfaces. She has the unusual ability to slide into the ball on all surfaces, not only clay, and this makes her a very accomplished defensive player, or counter puncher!

Achilles Heel is her Serve

She also has one of the most significant two handed backhands in the women's game and one of her most dangerous shots is the very same blistering backhand sent down the line with pin point precision but she does have one marked Achilles Heel that arguably keeps her out of contention for the number one spot, and that is her serve. Her opponents can mercilessly target her weak link and the good baseliners find it relatively easy to break her with consistency.

Jankovic has been knocking on the door of the top spot of the WTA rankings for a couple of seasons now and she did become the first number one never to have reached a grand slam semi final but with the rise of fellow Serb, Ana Ivanovic and the constant threat of the former world number one, Maria Sharapova, Jankovic may never be able to realise her dream of remaining at the number one in the world for any length of time.

Ivanovic & Sharapova May Deny her the top of the World!

Her career win/loss record against Ana Ivanovic is 1-6 and 1-4 against Sharapova, so unless she can start winning the big tournaments, she may have to settle with a spot in the top five.

Jankovic has won 7 WTA singles titles and pulled off the mixed doubles event at the Wimbledon Championships in 2007, together with playing partner, Scotland's Jamie Murray but her record on clay isn't that impressive, having won 40 of her 89 clashes on clay and her French Open career is just as ordinary - she has pulled off 6 victories in 13 starts, so unless she can up the ante it is unlikely she will claim the ladies crown in Paris any time soon!
