2011 French Open Womens Draw
The 2011 French Open Womens Draw looks no different from the ones we have seen in recent years, where the draw has been extremely open and it has been difficult to mark out a winner with any sense of confidence. With superstars Justine Henin and Serena Williams out of the picture, it becomes even more difficult to mark out who will claim victory at Roland Garros in 2011.
Has the time come for Wozniacki?
Caroline Wozniacki looks to be suffering from 'Safina' syndrome. Like the Russian, Wozniacki has been able to consistently beat the best players in the world without putting together the string of results required to win a Grand Slam tournament. Wozniacki is hardly a clay court specialist, and has taken just one clay title - on green clay in Charleston - this season. Keeping in mind that she's not on her favoured surface, and is yet to win her first Grand Slam, Wozniacki would need to make it to the final to convince us that she's a genuine contender for the title.
Petra Kvitova
Petra Kvitova looks like the player to watch out for in Roland Garros in 2011. The young Russian has impressed on the WTA Tours and recent gave an indication of what she is capable of on clay by beating the experienced Victoria Azarenka to win the 2011 Madrid Masters WTA event. Kvitova has both the form and hunger to do well at a Grand Slam, but is yet to make a serious challenge in one of these marathon tournaments.
Kim Clijsters
Kim Clijsters has been quiet since winning the Australian Open, but must fancy her chances of making her first French Open final since 2003. The Belgian has proven beyond a doubt that she can handle the pressures of Grand Slam tennis, and is more than handy on clay. Bookies don't seem to be giving her much of a chance, but we wouldn't be surprised to see her make an appearance in the final of the 2011 French Open.
Francesca Schiavone
Francesca Schiavone hardly features in the betting markets for the 2011 French Open, which is odd given that the defending champion is 5th on the WTA rankings and has done it all before. While a second consecutive Grand Slam title would appear unlikely for the Italian, she may play an important role in the tournament by eliminating a couple of players ranked amongst the favourites.
