Kim Clijsters

Kim Clijsters shook the foundations of women’s tennis when she won the 2009 US Open shortly after making her comeback to the professional game. The physical Belgian is one of the few players on tour capable of countering the imperious Serena Williams and is one of the few women on the WTA capable of winning consistently on all surfaces.

Kim Clijsters was born on the 8th of June 1983 in Limburg, Belgium. Clijsters’ family had a strong sporting tradition, with her father playing club football and her mother representing Belgium in gymnastics. Clijtsers would later credit her parents for her athleticism.
Clijsters was a talented tennis player during her childhood, and began playing on the junior international circuit as a teen. As a teenager Clijsters won both the US and French Open junior doubles titles and finished as the runner-up in the Wimbledon junior tournament. Clijsters went on to win her first WTA title at the age of 16.

Clijsters physical presence gifts her with strong, flat groundstrokes and an imposing service game. The Belgian is also very mobile around the court, and has the ability to slide on all surfaces. Clijsters is a superb defensive player, and can hit punishing winners after withstanding extended pressure in long rallies.

Kim Clijsters will always be remembered for her unexpected win at the 2009 US Open, when she claimed her second grand slam title at Flushing Meadows, shortly after returning from a two-year-long absence from the women’s game. She then followed this performance with wins at the 2010 US Open, and 2011 Australian Open. Besides her grand slam wins, Clijsters has also claimed several Tier 1 titles including the Tour Championship.

The Belgian has continued to display impressive form since taking the 2009 US Open, with her win in the 2011 Australian Open, and quiet form thereafter, suggesting that she has adopted Serena Williams' tactic of saving her reserves for the Grand Slams.
